What Kate Likes: Flannel PJ Pants

Winter is not my favorite season. I don’t enjoy being cold, or wearing sweaters and coats, or the pale skin that comes with the onset of the winter months. I don’t like using the heat inside or in the car. Winter also has the unfortunate habit of killing any desire to work out that I may have, since I always get asthma attacks in the cold. (What a great opening paragraph, right?? So cheery…)

However, there are things that I love about winter. I love being able to use the seat heaters in my car while driving (so cozy!). I also love the yummy drinks that become popular or available once cold weather hits: peppermint mochas, peppermint hot chocolate, hot chocolate in general, spiced cider. I love boots. I love curling up in front of the fire with blankets and a book and reading for hours. I love that I can wear my favorite slippers and my feet won’t sweat to death. But most of all, I love flannel!!

In my opinion, flannel is the ultimate winter fabric. It’s thick, it’s warm, and it’s fuzzy and cozy. I just recently bought a thin flannel shirt and it’s become one of my newest favorites for the fall and winter. However, my one true flannel love is pajama pants.

I love all of the whimsical patterns they come in as well as the traditional, tried-and-true plaids or stripes. My newest favorite flannel pajama pants are these Vineyard Vines pj pants . How cute are they with the little polka dot whales?? So cute. I love the aquamarine color because it’s my favorite color in the entire world, but the pale pink is equally adorable. They also come in a cute lobster/stocking print as well as other precious holiday prints! I would totally wear these with a t-shirt and slippers for opening presents on Christmas morning. Warm, cute, and flannel—what more could you want?

What Kate Wears: Christmas Cocktail

This is my first year in 4 years that I haven't at least had the option of going to a Christmas Cocktail party, which is really sad since CC is a perfect excuse to wear obscene amounts of sparkles and be completely Christmas cheery and season-appropriate.

If I was attending a CC party this year, here's what I'd wear.

The dress is sexy but not overly so, and the sequined skirt makes it fun and festive. Pair it with great high heels that are a little sexy and edgy, a glittery black clutch, and some long sparkly earrings and you're all set for a great night!

What Kate Likes: Holidays!

Hi sweet friends! Yesterday I got my laptop charger in the mail, so now I'm back!

Since Thanksgiving has officially passed us by, it's time to start getting ready for the holidays. I had originally planned on doing a series of gift guides, but for some reason, practically every blog I read has been doing them this year and I'm already gift-guided-out.

So. I'll be doing some other holiday-related things like holiday outfit posts or what's on my list for Santa this year...and maybe a fun little guide just because I can!

On an unrelated note, I now officially have less than two full weeks of school left forever! #panicmode. Still hunting for a job, so I would appreciate any and all prayers, good vibes, good wishes and/or good thoughts! :)

Check-in!

This is a suuuuuuper quick post just to say that I have some exciting, fun holiday posts planned, but I am currently without a computer charger and my laptop is dead, so all I have is my iPhone and that's not very conducive to blogging...as evidenced by the fact that I'm typing this on my phone and it's taking for-ev-er.

I should have my charger by Tuesday, so I'll be back to a more normal posting schedule soon after!

Happy Thanksgiving!

How adorable are these pups in their Pilgrim hats? #obsessed.

Hi friends! I hope you're all having a relaxing day full of family, friends, food, and football! I'm so pumped to stuff my face full of my mama's good cooking and snuggle up on the couch in a food coma the rest of the day. I'm so thankful for all of you sweet readers and so many more things. Happy Thanksgiving y'all!

Relaxing and Recharging

I'm having a great time at home, but I just wanted to pop in and say that posts will most likely be sporadic all week, since I'm trying to soak up as much relaxation time as possible before finals hit. Ideally, I'd prefer to be relaxing in the little nook pictured above, but my bed and the couch will have to suffice for now.

Have a great week y'all!

What Kate Likes: Vintage Shopping

I wouldn't say I'm a huge vintage shopper, but I get a good portion of my clothing from vintage shops. I mainly shop on Etsy for vintage because there are some amazing deals on there and I don't have a good vintage shop anywhere near me. Another point in Etsy's favor is that the selection has (for the most part) already been curated by the shop owners, so I don't have to spend my time picking through endless racks of clothing that may or may not be actual vintage.

Here's some tips and tricks that I've picked up through the years:

1. Know your measurements: This is so vital when shopping for vintage online. Vintage sizing runs differently than today's, so don't ever go by the size on the tag, go by the measurements of the garment. If they're not listed with the garment, don't be afraid to message the seller and ask, almost all of them will be more than happy to oblige. Measure your bust, waist, and hips and compare them to the garment to see if it'll fit. If you have wider shoulders, like me, you may want to measure your shoulder width as well to compare.

2. Condition is key: I try to only buy items that are in a "like new" condition or in a really great, hardly-been-worn condition. Again, don't be afraid to ask the seller a million questions about the condition or for more pictures. I try to avoid items with moth holes, stains, ink marks, missing beads/sequins, or other issues that can't be fixed. Is this always avoidable? No, I have been known to fall in love with a sweater or coat with a few teeny moth holes and end up purchasing. Use your judgement.

3. The tailor is your friend: Tailoring is definitely helpful when you're shopping vintage. Find a dress you love, but it's way bigger than you? A tailor can help reshape it so it'll fit you perfectly. I get a ton of my clothing (vintage and non) altered so it fits me really well. It may be a little bit more expensive, but the results are so worth it.

4. Narrow down the search: Use any criteria possible to help narrow down your search online. I tend to have a few fallback designers and decades that I use to help narrow down the selection, but you can really search by anything. If you're looking for a coat, try searching 'wool coat' or 'blue coat' or 'dress coat' or 'Ralph Lauren coat' rather than just 'coat'. This is really helpful if you're searching for something specific, but is also helpful when you're just browsing.

5. Buy what you love: On Etsy, you can add items and shops to your favorites. This is helpful if you're on the fence about something, just add it to your favorites and think about it overnight. The one downside is that it could be gone. I try to buy things that I either just love, can't stop thinking about, or are easily worked into a wardrobe of contemporary clothing. I tend to ask myself "would you buy this if you saw it in a modern store today?" and if the answer is yes, it's a winner. If the answer is maybe or no, then I think about it and most often pass. This helps you avoid looking like you're wearing a costume.

6. Don't overlook potential: Love a dress but really hate the long sleeves and think it would look better and be worn more with 3/4 sleeves? That's what your tailor is for. A good tailor will be able to do almost anything to a garment to make it more wearable.

I tend to avoid vintage shoes because worn shoes gross me out, but that doesn't mean you have to. I mainly shop for clothing, but really the possibilities out there are endless. Do a little research and know what you're comfortable with, then go shop! I am definitely not a vintage expert, but I know what I like, what I'll wear, and what looks good on me. I read all of the available information and ask questions if I need more, which helps me avoid problems most of the time.

Happy shopping!

Back to Texas...

I'm headed home today, since we get the entire week off for Thanksgiving. I'm excited to eat home-cooked food and generally just enjoy the comforts of home. This is our first Thanksgiving without our little kitty, which is going to be weird, but it's going to be even weirder not having my sister at home since she and her husband are celebrating their first Thanksgiving by themselves!

On a happier note: to me, Thanksgiving officially kicks off the holiday season, so I'm going to have a few little holiday-inspired posts leading up to the holidays to get you all in the holiday spirit! Get exciteddddd!

Have a good weekend!

What Kate Likes: Essie Winter 2012 Collection

I'm not a huge nail polish person, but I saw Essie's winter collection at Target today and just fell in love. The colors are all perfect for winter when you need sparkly holiday colors and bright solids to brighten up a dreary day.

Take a little look...

L-R: She's Pampered, Snap Happy, Leading Lady, Beyond Cozy, Where's My Chauffeur, Butler Please

Leading Lady and Beyond Cozy are glittery but it's teeny tiny glitter so it doesn't look cheesy at all. Beyond Cozy looks silvery in the picture, but it's really more of a champagne...so great for parties! She's Pampered is a perfect red, almost better than Russian Roulette, in my opinion. Where's My Chauffeur is a solid turquoise (so pretty!), Butler Please is a really gorgeous bright blue that's almost periwinkle, and Snap Happy is a deep coral that would be perfect year-round.

Can you guess which is my favorite? Which is yours?

What Kate Likes: Letters for Our Daughters

 via

Have you heard about the Letters for Our Daughters project? Basically, women from all over write letters to younger girls/women in order to "give [them] the combined wit, wisdom and general wondrousness of all of the women of the world". The letters are then collected on the blog and will hopefully one day (soon!) be made into a book.

I am so excited about this project. I feel like sometimes it's so hard to be a woman today, and young girls are influenced so heavily by media and often in a negative way. I think it's great that women are banding together and offering positive insights, advice and stories in order to help girls grow up to be strong women who realize that they're so important and valuable and unique in their own ways.

I think any woman, regardless of age, can read through these letters and feel inspired, loved, valued and encouraged by the words these women have taken the time to write. I only went through a few pages of the blog, but my soul was definitely touched (I may have shed a few tears...).

Read the letters here and learn more about the project here. If you feel so inclined, submit your own letter here!

What Kate Likes: Inspiration (part 2!)

For me, this time of year is always kind of dreary. It's cold, it's close enough to the holidays that school/work isn't interesting anymore, the last break was too long ago, there's tons of work to be done...basically this time of year just kind of sucks. The only bright spot is that Starbucks has their holiday menu out (I'm totally drinking a peppermint mocha right now).

If you're like me, you could probably use a little inspiration to make that final push through exams. If you're not like me, well, when has a little extra inspiration ever been a bad thing?

Hopefully you now feel a little bit more inspired and can make that final push towards the holidays!

30 Day Spending Challenge--Update!

I first mentioned doing a challenge for myself of 30 days of only spending money on essentials--food, rent, utilities, things I absolutely NEED, etc. in this post about consumption.

I started my challenge on Nov. 1 and wanted to do a little update now that it's been 11 days. I've done relatively well, I think. My only "non-essential" purchases were a few books in the Austin airport and dinner out once last week because I was too exhausted to cook. I also purchased a few tees on StyleMint because they were running a BOGO sale (and that's a good deal)...but technically it "doesn't count" since I ordered them the 31st.

In order to clarify the hazy issue of the word "need", I mean things that are essential. Shampoo because I'm all out? Yes. New lipstick just because it's a limited edition color? Not so much. A warm cardigan because all of my others are worn through with holes? Yes, within reason. Dinner out with friends? This falls into the gray area and I'm going to give it a 'yes' because a) I really don't eat dinner out all that much, and b) if I can eat a meal while socializing with some of my favorite people, I would much rather do that than eat a meal while sitting at home alone.

I'm interested to see how the rest of the month goes...maybe I'll stretch this out for a few months next time!

Thanks!

life is full of little pleasures

In the past few days, this little blog has blown up, in the absolute best way possible. I'm not quite sure what to attribute my jump in readership to, but I am so appreciative of everyone who takes the time out of their day to come read my thoughts. I have so enjoyed connecting with a few readers already and I look forward to connecting with many more very soon!

I wholeheartedly love reading comments and interacting with y'all, so please reach out and let's get to know one another! You can always comment on a post, send me a tweet or an email, follow me on Pinterest and Instagram...really there are so many ways for us to become friends!

Thank you so much for everything y'all and I am so excited about what's to come!

What Kate Likes: Puppies!

I'll put it bluntly: I am an animal lover. I love being around animals and playing with them and petting them and just loving them. The only reason I didn't go pre-vet in college was because I didn't want to take a million science and math classes and because I would have probably passed out doing a surgery or something.

Anyway. I don't have a pet of my own, and since our family cat passed away over the summer, I've really been feeling the loss of not having a warm and furry snuggle buddy or a little fuzzy face greeting you when you walk in the door. I've already decided that once I get a job, apartment and some money in the bank after graduation I'm going to get a pet, and right now I'm definitely leaning towards getting a dog (even though I've never had one).

Ideally, I'd like one of these little precious puppies...but we'll see!

Obviously, this post was a just a way for me to get away with posting pictures of cute little puppies...but I really do want one. I'm leaning towards a little Corgi or a Dalmatian...but we'll see!

Lazy Sunday (updates/random)

-I am completely overwhelmed with life right now, and not in a good way. This is my last week of classes before Thanksgiving and I have so much schoolwork this week (tests, projects, papers) that I won't be able to post until Friday at the earliest (big sad face for that).

-My interview this past weekend went well, and they should be getting back to us about offers sometime in the next two weeks, which is also adding to my stress level. I'm really undecided about what I'm going to do, if I'm blessed enough to receive an offer...yikes.

-Daylight savings time has seriously messed with my head. It's currently only 5:45 and it feels like 2 in the morning. Not a fan of that, I keep wanting to go to bed earlier and earlier when I have so many things I should be doing!

-I have somehow lost/misplaced my phone charger *in my apartment/room* and cannot find it anywhere...and of course my phone is at 11% battery. #awesome

-As much as I want my Thanksgiving break to be relaxing and full of reading/shopping/sleeping, it won't be and will instead be full of job applications and resume polishing and cover letter writing...not so fun.

-I really need to learn how to manage stress more. Any ideas?

Sorry this is kind of a downer post...it's just one of those days.

What Kate Wears: Job Interview

I have a job interview this weekend for a real post-grad job and I'm kind of freaking out but kind of excited. Actually, I have no idea how I feel about it, other than this week is going by TOO QUICKLY and I have a ton to do before I fly out Friday morning. Yikes.

I have to dress "business professional" two days in a row, and I'm already dreading the inevitable sore feet from wearing heels. Here's a little look at what I'm planning on wearing...

Shirt: Seriously one of my favorite shirts I own. It's cut slim but not tight, and long enough to tuck in and look polished. Plus the contrast collar and cuffs are so chic.

Blazer: With black pants, the blazer looks pulled-together and professional, but a little bit more relaxed than a full suit. It's also a good layer to stay warm on the plane and outside while not being bulky.

Pants: I love these pants. I have them in black and gray and wear them all the time. Comfy, stretchy, slim but not skin-tight, ankle-length (so Audrey!), affordable. What more could you need?

Heels: Corso Como heels are the comfiest. These have tons of padding and are perfect for those times when you have to walk a lot and still look nice.

For my actual interviews, I'm going to go extremely classic and conservative, just because you never know. I'll add a black blazer/jacket to the pictured outfit if I feel it's necessary, but couldn't find the one I have online.

Wish me luck, y'all!

What Kate Likes: Inspiration

One of my most followed Pinterest boards is my "Words I Love." board. The second is food, but that's another post in itself. Anyway, I started out just pinning or repinning quotes that spoke to me or I wanted to remember...and since I can't think coherently to write a real post today, I'm compiling a few quotes that I'm holding close to my heart and in my mind lately. Some are funny, some are spiritual, some are purely inspirational (and kind of cheesy...), but all of them are totally relevant right this second.

Follow my Words I Love board on Pinterest here if you so choose and you can follow my other boards here!

"He figured she'd gone back to Austin..."

I'm a little bit overwhelmed today (but in the best way possible)...my sister is getting married this weekend! So I'm headed back to Texas for a weekend filled with fun, silliness, and happiness.

I can't wait to get to Austin (hence the post title) and eat my weight in TX barbecue, see tons of family members I haven't seen in ages, and celebrate LOVE and getting a new brother!

My heart is overflowing with joy today and will be all weekend, or at least until I get back to good ol' Auburn Sunday night and sit down with my History of Costume notes to cram for my 8am test on Monday. But really, it's a test on 60s/70s fashion, so I'm not too upset about it.

Have a lovely, lovely weekend friends!
